Overview
Usually, our development cycle is burdened with high levels of complexity and unknowns. While there is no perfect way to estimate how long a particular feature will take to be completed, we have found that relative sizing offers many benefits through a simple and elegant Relative Sizing process.
Using this board, you can quickly estimate the level of effort required to develop a particular feature, and you can do it much faster than you can when using traditional estimating approaches. The Relative Sizing board employs the Relative Sizing technique so that you can size workitems easily. You can set the T-Shirt Size of the workitems by simple drag-n-drop in the relevant T-Shirt size bucket and also set corresponding story points against each T-Shirt Size. Once you have enough cards sized, the range and the average number of cards having that size are also available so that you can make an informed decision on sizing new workitems.
Navigation
Navigate to the breadcrumb at the top and hover over the Project name, expand the Agile Planning module, and select Relative Sizing.
Layout of Relative Sizing
The Relative Sizing screen includes the following:
- Toolbar section
- Unsized Cards and Sized Cards section
Toolbar
Select Card Type: You can select any of the card types defined in your project and for which you have required access.
Zoom option: Zoom levels help you get better visibility of the cards. As you increase the zoom level, the size of the card will increase.
Size Settings for the selected card type: The size set on each card type is referred to here as a T-shirt Size. For each type of T-shirt size, you can add an equivalent point. By default, certain points are defined for each size, but you can modify the points and select a particular attribute in which you want to set these points by using this option.
Maximize: Full-screen mode will hide the Top Panel and Menu bar of the application allowing you to have a bigger view and more focus on the Relative Sizing screen.
Unsized Cards and Sized Cards Section
By default, depending on the card type selection, all open cards and the latest a maximum of 50 closed cards get displayed on the screen. Depending on the size set on each card, they get distributed in the Sized Cards section under the respective size columns.
- If no size is set on the card type, then they get added in the Unsized Cards section.
- For open cards with no size, get added under the open card column.
- For closed cards with no size, get added under the closed card column.
Working with Relative Sizing
- For unsized cards, if you want to set the size, first click the ‘i’ icon provided in the header for each size.
- A pop-up window opens for the selected size as shown below. It provides the distribution of different child card types for the specific size of the selected card type. For example, the below screenshot provides the distribution of different card types for the ‘XS’ size set in the selected workitem.
- So, viewing this distribution table, you can estimate, how many open workitems of similar card types can be transferred to the specific size column. It also provides you the range for each card type that provides the interval from least to maximum closed cards set as ‘XS’. Along with that, it provides the Average of how many such card types can be set as ‘XS’ for a selected workitem.
- Using all of this information you can move an open or closed card to the specific Sized column and set the size to it.
- Lastly, if you want to map the T-shirt sizes to points, you can use the Size Settings for the selected card type option and make the required changes to the points.
