The COVID-19 pandemic has presented some of the most serious health and economic challenges that humanity has ever faced. The response by nations, organizations and just regular people to this threat has provided some interesting case studies on how this threat can be effectively tackled - or not.

In these testing times, organizations have understood that they need to transform in order to survive. However, their existing business models, organizational hierarchy and technology infrastructure simply cannot keep up with how quickly they need to adapt.

Organizational agility is the future of business, yet only a tiny fraction of organizations have successfully managed a complete Agile transformation. In spite of decades of implementation and success in IT, why does Agile struggle to make the jump to the rest of the organization? What if the very experiences that drive Agile change agents to evangelize it outside of IT are getting in the way of total Agile transformation?

Kanban as devised by Taichi Ohno was based on explicit tokens. Physical kanban tokens acted as signals to synchronize different processes and keep inventory under control. However, together with the intangible nature of knowledge work, Kanban systems have become increasingly virtual and kanban has become intangible. But, what if we bring (Kanban) tokens back to life? What if we build a token system much in the spirit of token systems that are currently used in the world of cryptocurrency? What if we go beyond Kanban tokens and build a token system that has an associated tokenomics (token economics) that incentivizes businesses to become ever more agile?
